Legislation
to raise the California Drivers License age to 17
Assemblyman Bill Maze (AD 34 –
Visalia) has
introduced legislation (AB 1877) to raise the California Drivers
License age to 17. The concern over new drivers is legitimate but the
solution this legislation offers is not only lacking but harmful to
the educational future of
California
teens.
The reasoning behind this bill is that 17 year old drivers
drive better than 16 year old drivers because they are more mature and
have more driving experience. If this legislation passes, the 17
year old drivers will no longer have the driving experience they use
to get and they will be just as bad as the current 16 year old
drivers. How much more mature is a 17 year old over a 16 year old?
How and who measure maturity levels? Will maturity questions now be
part of the DMV test? Let’s not forget that girls mature faster than
boys. Maybe gender and IQ need to be a factored in licensing as
well?
How will
California teens
compete for admission into universities with applications that lack
volunteer and work experience? Not to mention, extracurricular
activities like ASB organizations and sports. Working parents
cannot keep their jobs and drive “Johnny” to early morning practice,
an after school job, the library, and volunteer work? However, do
not despair; Pubic Transportation could be your answer. Or have bus
schedules been reduced in your area too?
This legislation will be heard in the Assembly
Transportation Committee. However, comments from teens and parents
are needed as soon as possible.
