Teen driving restrictions bill passes unanimously in the California Assembly Transportation Committee.

Assemblyman Bill Maze (AD 34 – Visalia) introduced legislation (AB 1877) to raise the California Drivers License age to 17.  This bill received no votes in the Assembly Transportation Committee hearing.  However, this bill has been modified and does not raise the driving age to 17 but instead creates other restrictions.      During the first year of getting a driver's license, the teen driver will not be permitted to drive between the hours of 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.  and will not be permitted to transport passengers who are under 20 years of age, unless in either situation the licensee is accompanied and supervised.   This modified bill passed the Assembly Transportation Committee unanimously on April 19th.

Under current law, the first six months of getting a license, teens are restricted from driving between mid-night and 5 a.m. and having passengers under 20 unless the driver is being supervised by a licensed driver over 25 -- usually a parent.  After the first six months of having a license, teens are allowed to drive with passengers  under 20 years of age and no supervision is required.  There is still no driving from midnight to 5 a.m. unless supervised by a licensed driver over 25.
